Dr. Matthew A. Torrington

M.D.

Dr Torrington is a family medicine doctor with a specialty in addiction medicine.  He is boarded by the American Board of Preventive Medicine in Addiction Medicine.  He is a distinguished fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine, serves as the Chair of the California Society of Addiction Medicine Committee on Opioids, and is a member of the CSAM board of directors.   Dr. Torrington serves as Cri Help’s pro bono medical director and has supported their clinical detox service since 2003. Dr. Torrington has been a volunteer clinical professor at the UCLA Nursing School since 2009.  Dr. Torrington maintains a private practice focusing on the longitudinal disease management of difficult addiction and pain cases.

 

Dr. Torrington completed a two-year fellowship at UCLA's Integrated Substance Abuse Programs, and worked for over a decade in clinical research and medication development; he has served as Principle Investigator, co-investigator or study physician on numerous clinical trials.   Dr. Torrington has participated in the clinical use and clinical research of buprenorphine for more than 20 years.  Since the early 2000s he has helped to educate physicians, researchers, psychologists, counselors and the public about the clinical use of buprenorphine.

 

Actively serving the community by providing care to those without financial means, Dr. Torrington believes that health care is a right not a privilege. He founded a free clinic that was later subsumed by the Venice Family Clinic.  Dr. Torrington has been formally recognized for his work with Common Ground Westside’s exchange programs, naloxone over dose prevention projects and HIV/Hep C testing programs.   Dr. Torrington supports Cri Help, which provides medical detox and residential programming, where he has been on staff for more than 20 years.

 

 

Dr. Torrington is involved in clinical research, community outreach and clinical practice. He is licensed to practice in the states of California and Idaho and remains involved in residential and outpatient treatment of substance abuse disorders.   Dr. Torrington maintains a private practice specializing in the longitudinal disease management of patients with substance use disorders and pain. Dr. Torrington utilizes a variety of novel and evidence-based techniques to help his patients achieve their goals, while embracing the patient centered care model. His method helps individuals develop and implement the appropriate combinations of biological, psychological, social, spiritual and nutritional interventions needed to help them achieve their goals over time.
